about the artist
Lita Farquhar is a multimedia artist who has lived in New Orleans for nearly a decade. All of her work is miniature and her main medium is polymer clay. All of the creatures featured in Litaβs work are handcrafted from polymer clay, sanded, painted with acrylic, and given a clear & protective top coat. Her love for miniatures and clay stems from brief, happy moments spent crafting tiny things with her Granny. The two also spent a lot of time in the dollhouse section of a childrenβs museum. In high school, the only joy experienced was in ceramics class which Lita took for three years and started the Ceramics Club.Β Β
Lita completed two years of an apprenticeship in the Carpenters Union here in New Orleans before deciding that was not the route she wished to go. In her time in Local 1846, she learned many skills and even spent 6 months working as a locksmith. These abilities, love for detail and intricacy, and building can all be seen in her current work.Β
Β The essence of New Orleans can also be seen in Litaβs work.Β Matchbox Minis have proven to be the most popular pieces and for those who are unfamiliar, the practice of establishments providing free, branded matchboxes is very common in the city. Lita strives to work mainly with upcycled materials attained at local thrift stores and estate sales. Most of the featured dollhouse furniture, fabrics, and mini accessories are a reflection of the people who live here. Due to many political and economic reasons folks in New Orleans have to make do with the materials that are accessible and complete the work themselves. This way of life is echoed in Litaβs work.Β
Β Lita has several adopted animals and her love for animals is clear through her work. Taking care of her animals and endlessly creating has saved her. Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Lita and her creations and thank you so much for your support.Β
